Looks like I am not using my brakes correctly......my front OEM brake pads are on close to 32 000kms, and might even reach 40 thou..
How in HELL did you do that??? Ride in circles???
Fortunately no circle riding..........but I think the more than 170 000 kms on my two previous bikes is taking it's toll at the moment. Maybe I should explain :
During more than 11 years before I bought my NCX, I owned and covered more than 170 000 kms on two bikes with different brake setups:
1. Kawasaki GPZ1100 - which came with TWO disc brakes at the front wheel, and ONE disc brake at the rear.
2. BMW R65 - which came with one disc brake at the front wheel, and an ordinary brake drum at the rear.
On BOTH bikes the disc brakes at the front wheels were a LOT more sensitive than the brakes at the rear - so I had no choice other than to use more (foot) pressure at the foot pedal - compared to using hand pressure at the hand brake pedal.....
Long story short - I think I just need to start changing my old braking habits.....
By the way - I ALWAYS used, and still use both brakes.

So time for me to change my pads Honda Zambezi 1400.00 for the front pads. They lasted for about 16k considering my rear pads are 98% as I don't use them unless I need more stopping power. My disc is still 100% no groove so this afternoon I will be doing the brakes.
Sorry if I have been away we have bought a new house and moved out our old house fixed her up to rent and living in a room with the in-laws until the new house is registered then we move and I will have to apply for new adsl. So logging in on the mobile for time being
I fitted SBS to my 700x and there have no problems with either disc wear or pad wear. The only difference is that the braking performance is better with the SBS by far. The part no's are different for the abs / non abs models. Abs - front 657ls and rear 828la. Non-abs front 700hs and rear 614ls.
Hey Neil,
You mentioned you bought SBS brake pads for you NC700X.
What are the part numbers (your quote above) on the DCT model? Will the 750X DCT take the same as the 700X DCT?
Also, how did you find these pads? I assume they don't last as long as OEM, but hopefully they not too hard that they damage the discs.
I'm planning on replacing my pads shortly and am looking for the best pads at a reasonable price - not Honda's crazy prices.
Richard, I can't help you with part numbers, but I'm fairly certain the brakes will be the same for both DCT bikes. I installed SBS pads (front and rear) a few months ago. A third of the price of OEM pads and work 100%. I think it is harder than the OEM pads, but I don't see any excessive wear on the discs. I'm in Pretoria and got a good price from Offroad Cycles in Koedoespoort.
Aftermarket brake pads definitely do not last as long as original pads, and the discs definitely wear faster when aftermarket pads get used. Having said that, the front disc does not nearby wear as fast as the rear one when the same brand of aftermarket pads get used on both wheels. I think this is due to the fact that the contact surface at the front disc is much bigger than the contact surface at the rear disc. Therefore the work load at the front disc is actually a lot less than the work load at the rear disc.
So depending on affordability in the shorter term, aftermarket pads for the front might not be such a bad idea. The front disc will definitaly last a lot longer than the rear one when aftermarket pads get installed.

I bought a front set (OEM) in the beginning of this year for about R1400. At that stage I was already in posession of an aftermarket set, but I did’nt want to use it because I already knew the disc’s lifespan would be shorter if I use it. Unfortunately the OEM set I bought got misplaced, and when I could’nt find it the aftermarket set has been installed. I am still using the aftermarket set, and after about seven months it became clear that the front disc does’nt wear as fast as the rear one if similar aftermarket pads get used.

I use the SBS ceramic pads rather than the sintered and have had no disc wear. I find that breaking performance is improved and they last as long as the Oem pads
I notice a squealing noise on the front brake (since I got my NC750X about 2 months back) if I apply light brake pressure at speeds below 10km/h. The first time I heard the squeal I had a quick look at the brake pads (without removing them) and its still in "new" condition.
As time went by the squeal just got worse. Yesterday I took the caliper off and the brake pads in search for the noise (I did put grease on the relevant places when I assembled it, but the noise is still there), and found what I suspect to be the source of the noise. The pad retainer is missing and now the brake pads vibrate under light pressure.
Does anybody know where I can get a replacement pad retainer (Highlighted in yellow) in the east-rand area?
