Well, the aftermarket SBS brake pads which I recently installed only lasted 6200 kms.........compared to the original Honda pads which lasted 18 100 kms.
My initial thought was rather to install pads from Honda again.......but the price would be about R1 200. After some calculations, I realized that I will be able to buy four sets of SBS pads for about the same price as one set of Honda pads. The four sets of SBS pads should last almost 25 000 kms, compared to about 18 000 kms on the Honda pads.........so I decided rather to go for the SBS pads again.

Agree with Cronos... Aftermarket brake pads are generally made with softer compound so they are cheaper to make but this also translates to the shorter longevity. Most "reputable" aftermarket pads are so well-made these days that they perform/brake just like the OEM ones... As long as the braking is consistent and stops when you demand it, then it is all good...
I don't think that these pads will do much more damage to the discs than the OEM's though, unless, of course, there are impurities in the compound. I find a tiny stone chip wedged between the pad and disc cause more damage then a shoddy aftermarket pad...
I wonder if ATE make bike brakes, the certainly make the best Motor Car brakes in my opinion.
I have been using ATE since I was 2 bricks and a ticky high. I have used various brands when I could not get ATE and in every case I did not get the lifespan out of them and they would fade when a lot of breaking was done due to traffic. I would also find that those brands would wear my discs down and damage them because of the copper and other additives that they used.
The compound on the rear SBS pads I bought is actually black in color, and the part number is 614 HF.
As far as aftermarket brake pads for motor vehicles are concerned, some time ago I started using Safeline brake pads on the Ford Focus on advice - somebody told me that Safeline brake pads are of better quality than any original Ford brake pads.
Long story short, I was very sceptical, but installed the Safeline brake pads.......just to discover that the pads are indeed better quality than original Ford pads . If Safeline brake pads were available for my NCX, I would not hesitate to try it...
So glad to see that people are not stuck in the past about the aftermarket parts... It is time that the manufacturers / dealerships recognise that they are chasing loyal customers away due to the overcharging... and don't believe a word when they try to justify with stocking/import duty etc... all the aftermarket ones require the same...
Being in the Trucking industry myself, I did a lot of buying parts. I once had a situation where I had to buy a clutch and needed it right away, so I ordered one from Nissan and one from Sachs. The 2 clutches arrived at the same time and when I opened the boxes The two clutch plates looked like twins!! They came off the same assembly line, that is how similar they looked. Only difference was the Nissan one had a Nissan stamp on it.
Sachs = R3500 Nisaan = R6500
Both clutches were made by Sachs.
Through the years I found that to be true with most parts from filters to spark plugs and they all got made in the same factories, just the packaging or brand names got changed or added.
i have seen a youtube video where the guy put non OEM pads on his nc and it chewed up his discs. he had to replace the discs. so i'm a bit touchy when it comes to the pads. my 2c's stick with honda pads if you can....
if anyone has fitted non oem pads please keep us updated on the wear of the pads and discs. if we can find happy medium that saves you a few rands here and there why not. honda pads are pricey!!!
I'm also curious to know. Anybody changed the pads on a nc750x yet? The dealers cant seem to even tell me what pads they are, and it seems they are different in size than the nc700??
I fitted SBS to my 700x and there have no problems with either disc wear or pad wear. The only difference is that the braking performance is better with the SBS by far. The part no's are different for the abs / non abs models. Abs - front 657ls and rear 828la. Non-abs front 700hs and rear 614ls.
