Hello everyone. I want to get a top box for my jacket and perhaps even a small laptop bag. Is there a size that is a good balance between too big or too small? What make/model would you recommend? Thanks!
I recently learned something about SHAD that I don't like... I have a SHAD topbox - the SH45, which is fine - it isn't SO big that it casts a shadow over my head, but it takes all I need for my daily commute. My full-face helmet goes in with loads of room to spare. I can get my helmet AND my jacket in there, but it becomes a squeeze. The bracket holding the case in place is great, sturdy and strong. Takes off quickly and easily. Here's the problem, though... SHAD uses a patented "3-P" system to mount their panniers onto the bike. This is a simple, lightweight bracket which bolts onto the top-box bracket at two points, and another at your rear footpeg - simple enough. However, not all pannier cases from SHAD fit onto the NC750X. I wanted the slimmer SH23's, so that I could still filter through traffic with them, but they won't fit on my NC. I have to take the larger, rounder cases, which broaden the profile too much for me. But, as a normal topbox, I can't fault the SHAD SH45, except on the price, maybe.
I have a Honda 45l topbox. It's unfortunately one of the more expensive options, but I'll struggle with any other topbox now that I'm used to it. It's wide enough and deep enough to take my tent, self-inflateable mattress, pillow, sleeping bag and rain suit or my helmet, jacket, gloves, etc. or two full-face helmets. I cannot imagine using a smaller size or different shape again.

I have a Shad40 which will take two open-face helmets. I can fit a backpack containing a laptop in it as well. Enough space for normal use and it has a carrier on top for something large like a tent for instance. It locks on securely (I fitted a Honda carrier) and has never fallen off (80 000km). So it works for me. When touring two-up I prefer a luggage roll for which I made a base out of wood. The roll then takes the tent, chairs, mattress, stove etc. in other words the 'house'. Clothes etc. goes into the panniers (Trax). Rain gear, camera etc. fit inside the glove box. But going for a 45/50 litre box is an option - depending on your needs. Best is probably to go have a look and then decide.
