Hi Kingnellie. I had the same issue a few months back. Damaged both my rims in a massive pothole riding in thick mist. Honda replacement quote was about R28 000 for both. Insurance did not pay as I apparently didn't take pothole cover. Had both rims repaired for about R1 400. Looks great and no issues with balancing, etc. I did it through Pretoria North Bike and Tyre. They sent the wheels to the East Rand somewhere. I can get the details if you need it.
Hi Hannes. I`ve been away on holiday for a couple of days and only got back yesterday, so things were on hold and everything closed as well. My insurance paid me out for a rim and new tyre. Met a couple of people who suggested places. Phoned my insurance company to inquire about the implications of repairing rather than replacing, since they paid out for a new rim! Apparently i will be held liable for the "Money not spent?" as i have to provide receipts as proof of spares bought and work done as specified in the claim? I`m gonna phone a family member in the morning to investigate this? Thanks for the assistance. Will look `em up or contact you if needed, Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your pothole experience... Looks like here in Kimberley isn't the only place with more freaking potholes, than people.
Fortunately you didn't come off, and end up with worse damage (to the bike or yourself). I hit a pothole with a 175 a few years back. It'd also been and the hole was totally covered in water. Can off, and tore a ligament of the knee.
I was not a happy boy.
You lucky that your insurance actually paid you out and not ask you to take the bike to a dealer & they then pay the dealer.
I'll be honest thou, if it was me I would rather take the money they paid out and get a new rim. You can always repair the old rim in time and keep it as a backup, or sell it. Also, I would much rather prefer to replace the rim than fix it, if I don't have to pay for it. You may just end put with a unbalanced rim, if the guys don't do a proper job.
Anywayz, good luck with sorting out the rim. Safe travels.
Kingnellie, I agree with Richard about replacing the rim rather than repair, especially seeing that your insurance paid out. Although my rims appear fine after the repair, I have this nigling thought about the rims everytime I ride.
Hi Richard.. Ya...i consider myself very lucky, i was only doing about 60km/h. New rim has been ordered and will be here on Wednesday. I also thought about the repair job, got some exta cash to splash on something else, but then thought about the MAYBE...i`m riding with the wife or alone, hit a small hole or something in the same repaired spot and end up much worse off than before.. Nothing else on my bike has a repair job, so a new rim it will be.. Thanks guys

Hi Hannes.. That same thought will go through my mind as well.. I have already ordered a new one. Will repair the old one and keep it for a backup? Maybe get a second front rim and fit them with EXTERRA tyres for some adventure riding??? Got a link for a second hand rim from an accident damaged NC, but i have no idea in what condition the rim is?? Cant wait..been off my bike for a month now... Ride safe..

From what I've been told, they repair the rims to the same spec as a new rim. My concern may be purely in my mind. It would however be a nice option to have additional wheels fitted with offroad rubber for the odd excursion.
Have recently had the same issuie with pothole damage, seems with the huge price on a new replacement rim insurance company's are actually opt in repairs instead of replacing. From what the asseor quoted (unless this includes new tires). Seemed a bit step quote was something like R 2000 per rim. Plus something like R350 for balancing. Currently still busy with insurance claim awaiting to see what the actual out come is. Might end up canceling the insurance claim. Get the repair done my self (excess fee dependent). Consultant says 10%. Policy wording says other wise.

Good luck.
The roads in Limpopo are also full of potholes as a result of the recent rains.
