I really enjoyed the ride from Graaff Reinet to Willowmore, where I discovered 'Sophie's Choice", an absolutely remarkable establishment that served a delicious veggie omelette for breakfast. If ever you find yourself in Willowmore, then make a point of visiting Sophie's Choice.
My ride from from Willowmore to Oudtshoorn was tinged with melancolic sadness because I was reaching the beginning of the end of my adventure. In Oudtshoorn I was met by fellow Bikers from Cape Town who escorted me the next day from Calitzdorp to Cape Town. And that concluded my SA Solo Tour 2016.
Revert, I must comment you on the courage, endurance and determination to do a solo ride as you have. This is a great achievement for not only being on the NC but also experiencing this great nation of ours. Thanks for sharing the trip and making everyone jealous. Hopefully there will be many more to come.
What a cool story. Think I need to start planning something like this myself. Just a question, is there something that you would do differently next time, something you wish you had taken with you? And how much does a tour like this coast you?
Hi Superm My trip in October was thankfully without incident and the weather played along. As a safety measure, one should contact the guest house owner at your next destination so that you are expected-if you don't arrive, they will check up on you. At some places I wanted to stay longer, but I had already pre-booked accommodation. That meant my itinerary was inflexible. I suggest that you contact your host and discuss some flexible arrangement. Accommodation varies from R450 to R900 per day - spoil yourself at least once with some upmarket accommodation. Fuel consumption is less than 5l/100 so that's 50l/1000km at R12 per litre - less than R600 er 1000km. I'm doing as much riding as I can before my body parts start failing.
I've just returned from another Solo Trip: CPT to Calvinia Calvinia to Kakamas - the 2 legs I joined some GoldWing riders; thereafter SOLO Kakamas to Kimberley Kimberley to Meyerton Meyerton to Bloemfontein Bloemfontein to CPT
On my new 750 it cost me less than 50cents per Kilometre - and I was moving it!!!
Well, that was fun. Did the Cape town to Heidelberg run (270kms) in 2hrs and 30mins. The fuel consumption was bad - 26km/l. The wind on Sir Lowry's pass was hectic and the gridlocked traffic between the pass and the N2 through Somerset West was horrendous. Otherwise the road was great. Only saw 2pairs of bikers heading in opposite direction.
