Jayb, my NC,s valve clearances were done at about 39k -only because I got a bit nervous at the time. My NC only went back to the dealer for the first service at 1k, and never again..
During the adjustment procedure I discovered that only the no 1 piston outlet valve clearances were 100% correct.
Clearances at no 2 outlet valves were the same, but incorrect.
Clearances at all inlet valves were the same, but incorrect.
At the moment my odometer is sitting at more than 70k and the engine still runs perfectly. I am thinking of having another look at valve clearances at 80k.
Thanks guys for the response, i will be checking valve clearance at my next service after payday. Seems i need to source a new rear shock now as well
Hi, I have just done the valves on my NC at 27 000 Km's and the clearance on No. 1 inlet was Zero. The others were also out but not that much. It is not difficult to do. I will do every 12 000 from now on.
They did mention that checking and adjusting the valve clearances are included in the service cost.
I can't actually afford to pay this much - can anybody recommend anywhere else where I might get this service done. I services my DR200 before but dont feel confident with changing the cooling liquid and checking valve clearances.
I also did not feel confident before I did did the valve clearances but today I am very glad that I decided to do it myself. If you have done valve settings before and you really wantto save money, it would make sense to try doing the service yourself.
I can not think of any reason why the spark plugs, cooling fluid, or brake fluid should be changed at 24 000km. If I remember correctly I changed my bike’s spark plugs at 37k and at the time the bike was still running perfectly. I did not notice any difference in performance when the plugs were changed. My cooling- and brake fluif have never been changed either. At the moment the clock is sitting at 73k and the 2nd set of plugs still works perfectly.
Anyway, giving advise regarding services might not work for everybody. Good luck, making a dicission in this regard is never easy.

Hi Nomadza. Unless there is a problem, the spark plugs should be perfect and be checked again at 48000km only. The rest of the service can be done by yourself for a fraction of the cost and you'll be glad you learned more about your bike. You can buy aftermarket service parts from motorcycle accessory stores and there are enough videos on youtube to guide you through the service itself. Hiflo filter makes good air and oil filters for the bike. If you are not technically inclined, it may be safer to have a mechanic do this. You'll have to shop around at service centres. Good luck!
My NC had its first service today at Honda Tygerberg. Dropped the bike off at 07:30 and at 09:50 got the sms I can collect the bike. Price R1384.89. Took me 8 months to reach 12000km.
Hi squeareplum. Looks like you're putting some good mileage on the bike. Is this mostly commuting or do you do some touring?
Hi Hannes, I use the bike every day, commuting, shopping visiting friends ect. I also done some one day touring on Sundays, the longest was 580km to Barrydale and back. The NC has become my main mode of transport, I hardly ever use the car, Its just parked in the garage cathering dust. Why use a car if you have a NC. I'm starting my first multi day touring trip tomorrow 09 Jan 18. I will post a ride report when I get back.
Henkt. I would honestly suggest that you do it yourself. This bike is extremely easy to service. Even the valve clearance check and adjustment is not difficult. If it is not your forte, you may have to shop around for pricing. Unfortunately I don't have enough trust in mechanics due to some nasty experiences, so I cannot guide you there.
